Meet Karl Slaikeu

Dr. Karl Slaikeu, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized psychologist, mediator and negotiation expert based in Austin, Texas.  He is a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo (MA, PhD), Princeton Theological Seminary (MDiv) and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (BA).

Dr. Slaikeu holds a patent for a business model that integrates cost savings methods of conflict resolution into organizational procedures.  He has mediated a wide range of commercial, employment and organizational disputes, and trained numerous attorneys, business leaders, mental health professionals and faith based leaders in conflict and crisis resolution methods.

Dr. Slaikeu is the author of When Push Comes to Shove: A Practical Guide for Mediating Disputes and five other books and numerous professional publications on negotiation, mediation, crisis intervention and conflict resolution.  His model for psychological first aid has been translated into thirty-two languages for use by the American Red Cross with earthquake and tsunami survivors in Central America and Asia.

In 2009-10 Dr. Slaikeu worked as a Sr. Social Scientist with the US Army in Afghanistan, where he patrolled with soldiers, interviewed villagers and advised Coalition Forces on adjustments to stability operations to address needs of the local population.

Formerly he held a tenured faculty position in the Department of Psychology at the University of South Carolina, and taught in the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin.

Representative engagements:

  • Mediated resolution of disputes involving: termination of CEO and strategic plan for large healthcare organization; conflict between Medical Director, Administration and Nursing Staff in a large hospital; litigation over possible separation of large group of subcontractors from Health Maintenance Organization; other cases involving personal injury, succession planning, employment and organizational conflicts.      
  • Engaged by a technology company to create and implement negotiation strategy as part of mediation to resolve discrimination claim.
  • Designed and implemented comprehensive systems to resolve employment and commercial disputes, in partnership with internal teams in multi-national companies with populations of twenty to over two hundred thousand employees.
  • Provided conflict resolution consultation to faith based organizations on topics ranging from changes in ordination standards to staff issues and conflict over decisions to exit and/or form new denominational structures.
  • Created custom materials (video, classroom and on line tools) and led teams to conduct enterprise wide train-the-trainer programs for international transportation and manufacturing companies.
  • Trained US Army Human Terrain Teams deploying to war zones in conflict resolution tools for use in establishing partnerships with local nationals as a part of stability operations.
  • Provided expert testimony regarding psychological impact of work related accidents and fitness for returning to work after injury.
  • Conducted analysis of loss runs for physician insurance carriers and self insured hospitals, presenting recommendations for reducing transaction costs for professional and hospital liability.
